Auto Insurance for Young Drivers

The biggest worry of most parents today is their children growing up and beginning to drive. They dread having to add them to their auto insurance policy because of the increase in premium. Unfortunately, all children grow up and when they start driving this has to be done. There are several reasons why insurance for young drivers is so high.

The first reason that premiums are high for young drivers is their lack of driving experience. You will need to have, at the least, over three years driving to be quoted a lower rate.

Next is their age itself.. If they are under the age of 25 the rate will mostly likely be fairly high. Normally a single male driver rates higher than a single female. This is because males are rated as a higher risk to insurance companies.

A young driver feels a sense of independence when they begin to drive. It is actually the beginning of responsibility. It is important as a parent to encourage your young driver to have confidence when driving to avoid any fear they might have on the road, to prevent any accidents.

At their age any accident, ticket or a suspension may double or triple an auto insurance premium. As adults, when we have any infraction on our driving record it increases our premium and it hurts our pocket, just imagine being a young driver. Paying for their premiums may help young drivers learn the importance of taking care of what they have and what it means to have special privileges such as driving a car. We must encourage them to realize how car insurance is important and how they must carry the proper types of coverage on the car.

When it is time for our teenagers to get a vehicle we must go with them to pick out a vehicle that best suits their budget. We must explain that a regular sedan or simple vehicle is cheaper in price for insurance then a sports vehicle or sports utility vehicle. As a parent we should have the last decision-making on which vehicle they should purchase at the beginning and explain to them how important it is to obey the laws of driving.

The most important thing is to instill in our young drivers is the importance of keeping their motor vehicle record clean so they are not paying outrageous premiums. It is important to drive safely, not only for them but for everyone else on the road as well. We might be driving carefully but perhaps the person in the other vehicle does not have the same mentality. We must encourage them to keep their eyes on the road and not to get distracted by anything else.

Keep in mind that we were young once. It is exciting for them to feel that sense of independence behind the wheel. So my word of advise to young drivers is, keep your chin up and eyes focused to keep your pocket full.

Auto Insurance Basics

Most people only think that insurance is something they need so they can get their registration and tag so they can drive. It is something that they need because their license will be suspended if they don't get it. It's just a bother to some because people think "I don't get into accidents, I am a careful driver."

Often times people will call for insurance and say give me the cheapest insurance or give me only what is required. Many people don't even know what this insurance coverage this is. A lot of people only really become aware of what coverage they have when they need it, like when they need to make a claim.

When you run into that stopped car or have someone sideswipe your car in a parking lot while you are shopping, suddenly having only the coverage is required by law may not be the best thing to have. You should always have as much insurance as you can afford to carry. Having too little is never good and if you have insurance you cannot afford is not any better. A policy that is cancelled due to non-payment does you no good at all.

Lets take a look at the state I am familiar with - Florida. Florida is a no-fault state. What does this mean? Well, if you have the proper state required coverage you will be protected by the no-fault law. If you are in an accident whether you are at fault or not at fault you will go through your own personal injury coverage for your medical expenses for the first $10,000. If you do not have at lease state minimum insurance then you will not be protected and may be subject to paying for the injuries of the other people you hurt in the accident.

There are many types of coverage to purchase and meet your insurance needs. Every coverage has a purpose and all are good to get.

Florida state minimum insurance is Personal Injury Protection and Property Damage. Personal Injury Protection or P.I.P. covers your medical, hospital and funeral expenses up to its limits. It also covers others in your vehicle and pedestrians struck by your car. You are covered for up to $10,000. There also may be a deductible. This can be 0, 250, 500 or 1000 deductible. A $1000 deductible being the minimum in Florida.

Property Damage liability covers if your vehicle damages another person's property. This could be their car, house, motorcycle, etc. Limits for this are $10,000, $25,000 or $50,000. The Minimum in Florida is $10,000.

Another valuable coverage is Bodily Injury Liability. Bodily Injury covers other people's injury or death that you are responsible for up to the limits you purchase. This is not required by Florida for state minimum insurance, but it would satisfy another law called the Financial Responsibility law. This law states that if you are not financially responsible at the time of and at fault accident where someone gets injured or property damage occurs, your license may be suspended. At this point you may be able to get your license back by filing an Sr-22. This form shows to the state you are now carrying Bodily Injury Coverage and are now financially responsible. Usually you must carry this for 3 years with no lapses in coverage.

Another common insurance people ask for is Full Coverage. This is not an insurance coverage and means a different thing with every company you call. Most people only know that their car dealer or bank wants Full Coverage so they ask for it. Comprehensive and Collision is what these companies are looking for. Collision covers repairs when your vehicle hits or is hit by another vehicle. If it is destroyed it will also pay up to the book value of the vehicle at the time of a loss. Comprehensive covers for loss caused by other circumstances other than a collision. Some examples are theft, flood, fire or animal damage. This will also cover total losses up to the book value of the vehicle.

Other types of coverage available are medical and Uninsured Motorist. Medical covers medical costs to you and your passengers injured in an accident. Uninsured Motorist covers injuries to you and your passengers when the other person in the accident is at fault but does not have insurance or does not have enough insurance.

These are just some of the basics about the insurance there is more detailed information about each coverage at the Learning Center at http://www.carinsurance.com. But this information should give you a good idea about what type of coverage you might need to research more or be ready to purchase. Knowing the basics is your first step on making smart purchasing decisions!

Car Insurance Advice for Young Drivers in the UK

Over the course of the last ten years, car insurance for young drivers in the UK has increased substantially.

This has caused many problems for new drivers with premiums averaging £1300 for a newly qualified 17 year old male driver.

Young female drivers pay a lot less for their policies due to their reduced risk of being involved in an accident. EEC law is looking to make this a discrimination issue but insurance companies and representative groups are opposing this move.

The main factors which will effect your insurance premium are listed below;

The Vehicle - Choosing the right vehicle will have a massive impact on your premium. As a guide, look at the insurance group of the car. The grouping structure runs from Group 1 to Group 20 and your insurance premium will increase as you move through the groups. Use the link below to our web site and use the car grouping guide which will give you an indication of which vehicles fall into which groups. Do not however rely on either guesswork or a basic group guide when choosing a car. Even a subtle difference in model of vehicle could effect your premium massively - Get quotes on every type of car you are looking at before deciding on buying one.

Where you live - Not a lot you can do about this but in some areas of the UK you are twice as likely to have your car stolen. In London you are 50% more likely to be involved in an accident - Your premium will reflect where you lice.

Pass Plus - If you have just passed your test, seriously consider pass plus. This will give you discounts of up to 20% off your insurance premium. The course costs £120 so can be very effective at saving you money and improving your driving skills.

Type of Cover - As a first time driver you will normally be restricted to third party fire and theft cover because of the costs involved. Consider third party only cover also.

There are no shortcuts when insuring your first car but there is a silver lining to that horrible first premium. A safe years driving will result in a drop in your premium of around 50% in the following year.

Shopping Options for Auto Insurance

Shopping for car insurance can be a big undertaking. It can be daunting at times but is very important. There are now many ways to get yourself insured and the coverage you need.

Smart customers know it pays to do a little research before buying car insurance. Just based on the price of the insurance rates today, why not take the time to check the rates with several companies. Researching companies holds true for renewals as well. You can get a feel for the insurance market and find out if you have the best rates. If your current policy is already cheaper you know you are doing all right.

The first and best way to find out what is out there is to go through your local phone book. Most, if not all, companies will give you quotes right over the phone. This way you can run down the list and get multiple rates right away. One thing to remember is to compare apples to apples. This means make sure you are getting the price for the same type of coverage.

Full coverage for one company is not the same as for another. Limits are important to look at as well. Bodily injury with company A may be a little cheaper then B but their coverage may be only 10,000/20,000 while B's is 100,000/300,000. You want to make sure you are aware of the coverage you are have and that you want the type of insurance you are getting a rate for. You can always adjust your policy up or down to meet your needs. Before adjusting it down consider that you may save a few dollars now by lowering coverage but during a claim be unhappy that the limits paid are lower then your damages. Always, always buy as much insurance as you can afford.

Another way to find companies in your area is to go online. The Internet is an excellent tool to help you shop around. You can look up many carriers and may even be able to run quotes yourself. There is no waiting on hold and you can usually do it 24 hours a day. You do not have to wait for an agent to help you or call you back if he or she is busy. You can print out lists and easily compare prices.

Online you can also check the credentials of the company. You can look to see how long they have been in business and find locations. You can find companies that are not in your local area but can serve you just as well. Some companies allow you to start your policy right on the computer for added convenience. You can get your quote, enter your information and activate your policy immediately. Proof of insurance usually can be printed right from your home computer's printer.

Driving around town may also afford you the chance to find a company that is close to you. An agency close to your home or job is convenient. Agencies close by also let you make payments right in the office and lets you get to know your agent. This way however does give you a limited amount of choices and prices may not be as good as you may get by calling around.

Is one way better then the other? Well that is up to you. Some people just want to get the process over and done with. Some people want the best rate available. Some want the best and most coverage available. The answer is whatever is most comfortable for you is what you should go with.

Finding Auto Insurance Comprehensive Coverage

You can go online to easily find and quote auto insurance comprehensive coverage.

The definition could include basically (2) trains of thought. Often the term comprehensive merely applies to thorough physical damage in the event of loss to the vehicle itself. That's when auto insurance comprehensive coverage comes into play.

The other thought relates to overall benefits that include bodily injury, uninsured motorists, medical payments, under insured motorists, comprehensive and collision features. That essentially provides broad and pretty thorough coverage.

A broad range of coverage's naturally determine the final premium to be paid. You can adjust by picking and choosing, then requiting and eventually come up with a tailored policy the suits you and hopefully your pocket book.

Laws require we at minimum carry liability insured and lenders that finance our vehicles insist on comprehensive and collision during the time they are financing your auto – that's of course to protect their investment. Once the loan has been paid off you no longer are required to provide that coverage. Of all the elements available that portion of the coverage generally by far is the most expensive.

The costs of insurance are impacted by age, past driving experience, type of use, and what the vehicle is and its costs. It's worth checking out some quotes online before you even purchase a vehicle because in some cases you could be in for a huge shock and may want to re-think your choices.

So when it comes to finding what you need it's quite simple. You go online, type in auto insurance comprehensive coverage and you'll have many resources to use in shopping for your coverage's and do it for free as well. Easy, fast and very convenient.

New Concepts in Car Insurance - Pay as You Drive

You can pay as you talk with a cell phone plan, so why not pay as you drive auto insurance? It sounds like a good idea; but would pay as you drive auto insurance work for you?

The idea behind pay as you drive auto insurance is simple. Basically its this- if you do not drive very much, you will not pay high insurance premiums. Advocates for this type of insurance policy think that there are many merits to this type of program. Less air pollution, lower gas consumption, and lower costs to the consumer among them.

What if you car pool to work, or take public transit? You are not using your car very much so why are you paying high premiums. With a pay as you drive auto insurance premiums you would be able to quite literally pay as you go. Another situation where this plan would be of benefit is that of many retirees who have winter homes in temperate climates, the 'snowbirds' living in Florida or Arizona six months of the year and six months in New York or Toronto for example.

Essentially the insurance companies would set an average driving amount for each car type. It could then be broken down into a cents per mile basis. If you wanted to us the pay as you drive auto insurance system you could purchase a set number of miles and you would be covered for insurance during this period.

Pay as you drive auto insurance is an excellent idea for those individuals who do not use their car very much or try to find cost saving methods or environment saving alternatives. Currently this type of program is not yet available, but there are supporters in many states who are hoping to change that soon.

Groups including Environmental Defense, the Conservation Law Foundation and even the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency are working to organize a national cooperative that would work with insurance companies to offer deep discounts for low-mileage drivers; halfway a step toward PAYD (Pay As You Drive) insurance.

General Motors and On-Star Offers PAYD Rates. In mid-2004 General Motors Acceptance Corporation (GMAC) Insurance began offering mileage-based discounts to OnStar subscribers located in some states. The OnStar system reports a vehicle's odometer readings at the beginning and end of the policy term to verify mileage. Motorist who drive less than specified annual mileage can receive insurance premium discounts of up to 40%.

High Risk Auto Insurance - How to Lower Rates

How is your driving record lately? Do you have a large amount of speeding tickets or maybe a few car accidents on your driving record? High risk auto insurance generally means one thing for sure, higher car insurance rates. Even though high risk auto insurance rates are typically higher, there are a few things that you can do to reduce your costs now.

There are other factors here as well. Insurance companies will continually deem men a greater risk than women, teens greater than adults, and urban folk greater than rural dwellers. Whether you've had auto insurance coverage continuously over the past few years will affect your risk rating, because insurers assume you've either been driving without coverage, which is bad or had your policy canceled by the previous insurer, which is even worse. And of course your credit rating will be looked at. Bad credit equals bad risk. So what can you do?

To be blunt, clean up your driving record and start paying bills on time.

It generally takes some time to rebuild a poor driving record. The best way to eliminate your need for high risk auto insurance is to rebuild your driving record. This will take some time. But the most important thing that you can do is drive safely and carefully and over time you will improve your driver rating.

Even though it will take some time to eliminate your need for high risk auto insurance, there are some things that you can do immediately to reduce your insurance costs.

Many insurance companies offer lower insurance rates if you drive an older model car. Also, a four door model may inspire lower rates.

If you are looking to reduce the costs for your high risk auto insurance you may want to consider only getting a basic insurance coverage for your car. With only collision, you will pay a reduced rate. A basic insurance coupled with safer driving will allow you to save money on insurance even when you are considered high risk.

An Intro To Auto Insurance

Although premiums, policies and prices vary widely, the mandate does not. Automobile insurance is an unavoidable expense of driving. Ideally, you will never have use for your auto insurance. In the event that you do; however, you will considerably improve your satisfaction with the claims process by doing thorough research before policy inception.

Begin with an understanding of auto insurance terms:

• Bodily injury (also called liability)

This coverage offsets costs related to the bodily harm and property damage of the other driver(s) when you are at fault in an accident. Insurance companies impose limits on the amounts that they will pay to the victim(s), and for each accident. Your premium amount is determined, in part, by the limits you select. Higher potential payouts by your insurance carrier translate to higher insurance premiums for you, the consumer.

• Collision

In the event that you have an accident, your medical expenses and property damage will be covered if you select collision protection as a part of your plan (again, there are limits).

• Comprehensive

This category covers costs related to damage, theft, vandalism, etc. For example: if someone breaks your car window, you would access your collision coverage to repair the damages. Again, higher payouts mean higher premiums. If cost is a concern, increase your deductible to decrease your premium. The deductible is the amount, usually between $250.00 and $1,000.00; you pay toward accident/theft related expenses before the insurance company contributes.

• Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist

Although automobile insurance is legally required, some drivers do not comply. If you have an accident with such a driver this coverage will provide some compensation for medical expenses.

Auto insurance can be quite costly, but it is far more expensive to forgo. Many states arrest and/or fine drivers found to be uninsured. Additionally, accidents, theft and damage can create financial chaos for uninsured/underinsured motorists.

When choosing an insurance carrier, make sure that you have chosen a reputable firm that is accessible, responsive and financially solvent. The coverage is of no use to you if you can reach no one to file a claim, or if there is no money to pay it. Check with agencies such as Standard & Poor's and the National Association of Insurance Commissioners to get the information you might not get from a slick brochure or salesperson hoping to close a deal.

Car Insurance No Claims Bonus Explained

No Claims Bonus is a term used to describe the number of years you have had Car Insurance without making a claim. Put simply, if you have had Car Insurance for 4 years and you have not made a claim in that time, then you have 4 years No Claims Bonus. No Claim Bonus is probably the single biggest factor affecting the cost of your Car Insurance premium. Every year that goes by without you making a claim is another year of No Claims Bonus.

Generally speaking, the more No Claims Bonus years you have, the cheaper your premium will be for the car you need to insure. This is because Car Insurance companies can see that your history regarding making any accident claim is a good one.

When changing provider, Car Insurance companies will usually ask you to prove your No Claims Bonus in the form of a renewal notice or a letter from your current Car Insurance company. If you have several years of No Claims Bonus but then make a claim, the Car Insurance company will usually apply it's rules of how much to knock back your No Claims Bonus Years. Some companies such as Accept Direct http://www.acceptdirect.co.uk offer to protect your No Claims Bonus for an extra fee during the quotation process. Having full no claims bonus can also entitle you up to 75% discount on your car insurance premium.

Young Driver Car Insurance

It has become increasingly difficult to get young driver car insurance in the UK. The reason behind this is because the statistics for young drivers having a car accident are not very good. By definition, young drivers have very little experience of driving and thus have a greater chance of having a bump in their vehicle. Car insurance companies are obviously in business to make money and are understandably reluctant to insure such drivers. In most cases, companies will either offer a policy at a very high premium or refuse to insure the person altogether.

However, there are ways to lower your premium. First of all you should purchase a car that has a low insurance group number. Insurance group numbers range from 1 - 20. Generally speaking the higher the number the higher your premium is likely to be. This is because cars with high insurance group numbers usually have bigger engines, are more expensive and go faster. A low insurance group vehicle will lower the premium for a young driver policy. Young drivers should also be encouraged to take an advanced driving test. Some companies look favourably on drivers who take this test as they are seen as more responsible and more careful about their driving. Finally, opting for third party fire and theft or third party only cover also lowers your quote. If you have purchased a vehicle that does not cost very much money then you should seriously consider whether or not you need a fully comprehensive policy.

Getting cheaper quotes for young drivers can still be tricky. However, http://www.acceptdirect.co.uk have a special option that is aimed at this particular market and can save you a lot of money on your insurance quote.

I Was In An Accident, Will My Car Insurance Rates Go Up?

You were on the phone, got distracted and before you knew it traffic had stopped, giving you no room to stop and you rear end the girl in front of you. Or, let's say you're driving along and a deer jumps out and rams into the side of your door.

Now, let's say you need to file and claim and get your car fixed. But, are your rates going to go up?

In the first case, more than likely they will depending on how much your insurance company pays out to fix both cars and medical bills if anyone was injured.

But, in the second example, since this will be a comprehensive claim your rates should not see an increase at your renewal. Unless you have a long history of hitting deer then the people from PETA will be out to get you. Or if you file a lot of small glass damage claims then your rates could be affected or you may have to pay a higher deductible for comprehensive in which case small glass damage will be less than your deductible and you will pay out of pocket.

Part 2: How long does an accident stay on my record?

Ok, so back to the example where you rear ended someone. We have already established that you are going to see your insurance rates go up. Now, we need to find out how long and how much will they go up.

State insurance boards usually allow insurance companies to charge for a accident for 3 years from the day they started charging for it. Not from the time you got into the accident. You got in the accident in December and your policy runs from October to April. Your rates won't be affected until April of the next year and the surcharge will drop off 3 years from that April.

How much will your rates go up? Are they trying to get back the money they paid out for my claim? You can usually expect a rate increase of between 20-40% on average per six months. They could go up even more if you lose some discounts you were getting, such as a claim free discount.

The increase is not a recoupment of the monies paid out by your insurance company. It is designed to charge you a premium based on the risk, or chance, that you will get into another accident in the next 3 years. You are a higher risk to the insurance company and they are able to charge you for the higher risk you present to them.

If it was based on how much the insurance company paid out then you wouldn't be able to afford it if you totaled out your 2004 Nissan Maxima at $25,000 and you had to pay that back within the 3 year surcharge period. Makes sense? Good, now get off the cell phone!

How Do I Lower My Auto Insurance Rates?

Since there are many factors that go into determining your auto insurance rates, there are many chances to lower your rates.

If you change jobs and your drive to work changes or you stop working or you work from home, you should contact your insurance company.

If you have a teen driver and they go to school over 100 miles away without a car then you should be able to get a discount.

If you get married and are in your teens or twenties call your insurance company and see about combining your policies.

Take defensive driving if your state allows it for a discount.

See if increasing your comprehsive and collision deductibles will save you a lot of money. You need to compare what you're saving and how much more you will have to pay if you file a claim. For example, if you go from $500 to a $1000 deductible and it lowers your insurance $50 per 6 months then it saves you $100 a year.

It will take you 5 years to break even from what you are saving compared to how much more you have to pay.

Now, if it saves you $250 every six months then it would be more worth your while.

See if combining your auto and home insurance polices will qualify for a multi policy discount with your current company. This could be a substantial discount.

One of the biggest ways you could save $200-$500 or more a year is shopping around for insurance. The auto insurance industry is very competitive and this is great news for smart consumers like yourself. Shop for auto insurance quotes here and see how much you can save.

New Car Registrations and Car Insurance

In September 2001 the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) introduced a new number plate registration system that was designed to last for 49 years. The new change was welcomed not only by the car dealers but also by the car insurance industry as the DVLA also decided to issue new car registrations twice a year instead of once a year.

In the past, new registrations were issued on 1st August every year. Inevitably this caused a major headache for insurance companies as so many people required insurance at this time. This once a year rush for insurance was compounded by the summer timing when most people, including insurance company employees, go on holiday. Today, the new registrations are issued in March and September. This eases the workload for insurance companies and allows them to more easily staff up for the increase in calls.

Of course, the old system ran for about 38 years and so there is still a large population of people who require insurance renewal on 1st August. So around July, August and September, Insurance companies are still especially busy and you can generally expect long call centre waits with a lot of direct companies.

Using the internet instead is a much easier and quicker way of getting your new car insurance quote. Accept Direct have a very fast online quote system which cuts out the need of waiting for a call centre person to answer. The Accept Direct website is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year and along with its sister online claims website will deliver you a competitive quote in minutes.

So whether you're looking for a cheap insurance quote for your brand new car or would like to get a low cost renewal, just go to the Accept Direct Car Insurance website at and save yourself some time and money.

Motor Insurance

Motor insurance is a requirement if you want to be able to safely and legally drive a car. A car insurance policy is there to provide you with cover in the event of an accident or damage to your vehicle and therefore against the high cost that such damage could cause.

There are a great number of companies that can offer you car insurance within the UK and it can often seem like a frightening task to attempt to find the best deal for you as the quotes and prices you will pay can vary greatly. There are also now a variety of companies that can provide specialised car insurance then can be much cheaper and is aimed at specific areas of the market and if you do fall into one of these groups then it can be a very cost effective way of keeping your car insurance low and also finding other beneficial services that are applicable to your group.

Factors that are worth considering are who will be driving the vehicle and which type of events you wish to be covered for. The make and model of the car that you own goes along way in determining the cost of your policy as many cars are insured depending upon the engine capacity and how powerful the car is as you are thought to be more at risk of being involved in a claim. It is worth remembering that when you a purchase a new car to not surpass your budget or purchase a car that is very powerful since you must take into account the effect this will have upon the cost of your insurance.

There are three main categories of motor insurance that are currently available and these are Third Party only, Third Party Fire and Theft and Comprehensive. The one that you opt for is dependent upon the areas that you feel are most important to you.

Third Party only will cover you against damage to the third party's car or to the third party themselves. If you are ever involved in an accident involving someone else and end up causing damage to that car or if it results in injuries to the occupant of the car, then this policy will pay for the repair to the vehicle and pay for any treatment needed if injuries are suffered by the persons of the other car and any passengers in your car other than you.

A Third Party only policy will not however pay for the costs of repairing your own vehicle or any costs required to cover medical or health expenses if you are injured. It is also worth noting that if your vehicle is stolen or catches fire then a Third Party only policy will not make pay out toward the theft or repair required to the car.

Third Party Fire and Theft cover is essentially the same thing as a Third Party only policy; although in this case a Third Party Fire and Theft policy will also pay out in the event that your vehicle is stolen or set on fire.

If you wish to be covered for all eventualities and want to have greater peace of mind if your car is valuable then you should opt for comprehensive insurance which will provide cover for all of the above.

The Car Insurance Calculation Explained

Different companies will apply different factors to the way they finally arrive at a price for your Car Insurance. Generally speaking though the concept is the same. This involves collecting various bits of information from you and feeding it through a computer system which adds or takes away money depending on the answers you give.

The value put on these answers is decided by the individual Car Insurance company.

For example, some Car Insurance companies may believe that having a speeding conviction increases your chance of having a personal injury accident in the future - therefore they may add money to your price if you have such a conviction.

Similarly, some Car Insurance companies may decide that because you have a lot of No Claims Bonus Years then you are less likely to claim - therefore they may discount your price. All in all there are around 30 different factors that may affect your final premium. Now you can see why you get such a difference in the price of your Car Insurance by going to various companies. Each company will have it's own view of what they believe should be assigned to each answer you give. The Car Insurance quote you get through the Accept Direct website will look at lots of different Car Insurance prices from lots of companies.
